Reading

Narration reading is a method in teaching reading skills and comprehension. Narration holds students accountable for the story as a whole. They are not just required to recall the plot, the characters, or the setting; they are accountable to create the same mental pictures the author did through retelling. Narration is not memorization or parroting. It is not word to word, but point to point.  It is a type of essay response-broad, open-ended, questioning with a recall of certain information.  Narration maximizes the process of comprehension and meaning.  Studies show that children who narrate comprehend far better than those who do not.  This method also challenges students to strengthen their reading skills in areas of finding the main idea, sequencing the steps in a story, drawing conclusions, categorizing, inference questioning, and expanding their vocabulary. Mr. Popper Penguins, Secrets in the Maple Tree, Owls in the Family, Little House in the Big Woods, The Best Christmas Pageant, and Swiss Family Robinson are several of the novels read using the method of narration in 3rd grade.

Spelling

Third grade spelling is a course designed to teach students to spell new words using the phonics rules. These rules will teach them to learn to spell any new word they may encounter. These rules aid in the spelling of words that the students use in their everyday writings.

Language

Third grade teaches the following concepts dealing with the eight parts of speech: noun-common and proper, singular and plural, and abbreviations; verbs – action, linking, helping, present, past, and future tenses; pronouns- subject, object, and possessive; adjectives and adverbs. Sentence structure and mechanics of writing using capitalization and punctuation skills are taught. They implement these skills in writing friendly letters, persuasive essays; make believe stories, book reports and compare-contrast essays. Students are taught to expand, improve, and edit their writing; which leads them to express their ideas through formal and creative writings.
