Lower School Technology
Canyon Creek Christian Academy’s lower school technology program introduces students in grades K-4 through 6th grade to technology through various applications, projects and enrichment activities. Students in grades K-5 through 4th grade come to the computer lab weekly. Students in grades 5th and 6th come to computer twice weekly. Students in K-4 come to computer weekly beginning the second semester of school.
Students in K-4, K-5 and 1st grade are introduced to the basics of computer use and how to maneuver and effectively perform basic computing tasks. Computer time is also used to re-enforce concepts taught in the classroom by utilizing various applications and activities. The second semester of 1st grade students begin to learn touch-typing techniques, which are emphasized heavily during lower school computer.
In addition to touch-typing, students in grades 2nd through 6th complete several computer projects that are integrated with their academic classes. These projects include power points, podcasts, desktop publishing, research papers, creative writing and spreadsheet manipulation including creating charts and graphs. Students are also taught technology safety and ethics and how to navigate the Internet safely and effectively.
The Lower School use of technology supports our goal to provide children opportunities for academic, social, physical and spiritual growth from the first day to the last. One of the primary goals in each class is to inspire students to have a desire to acquire information and use critical thinking skills for self-discovery within the framework of the skills driven, specified curriculum. Instructional strategies in the classroom are designed to animate the students’ curiosity and to elicit a desire to apply lessons to daily living.
Teachers provide instruction not only directly, but also through group activities, interactive learning games, and various hands-on manipulatives. Teachers in each grade level work as a professional learning community, meeting together to plan lessons. Interdisciplinary units integrating language arts, writing, literature, math, science and social studies are commonly taught throughout the year. Many of the ancillary classes also tie lessons in to the grade level units, providing students opportunities to build a relationship between the ideas presented from class to class. The standards and expectations for what students can accomplish are set extremely high. Our rigorous academic curriculum from Pre-K through 4th grade prepares students for Middle School and Upper School requirements. A head start for the best colleges begins early!
More than anything, the true motive behind the teaching, the routines, and the discipline is love. Our desire is to partner as a parent-school team to train children to love the Lord, relate to others, and reach out to the world.
